Persuading customers to purchase a new product or demonstrating why a business needs a specific service---these are among the roles of a senior copywriter. These professionals work for advertising firms and corporations, usually as part of a team of creative professionals. While other team members design the graphics or publications used to sell a product, copywriters provide the words that persuade the customer to buy it.
Senior copywriters manage a team of writers who provide text for a wide range of products, including brochures, product fact sheets, promotional emails and postcards and Web pages. They may also generate scripts for promotional videos or write text to be used by telemarketers. The senior copywriter must ensure the work the team produces fits within the branding strategy and target audiences of each client. He may facilitate brainstorming sessions for his team.
The senior copywriter may present draft materials to his firm's creative team and managers or to the client. He ensures his team meets all copy and submission deadlines.
The senior copywriter is expected to monitor cultural trends to make sure the messages her team produces are relevant and appropriate.
Skills and Personal Traits
The ability to use computers and Microsoft Word is a must for a senior copywriter. Strong spelling, grammar, proofreading and communication skills are also important.
A creative, curious nature is key, as well as the ability to think in visual terms. Employers want senior copywriters who can manage several projects at the same time and have the ability to negotiate.
Education and Knowledge
Employers expect senior copywriters to have a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, marketing, mass communications or a related field. They also need a solid understanding of marketing, media and technology.
Applicants may need five to10 years of writing experience in a marketing agency or within a corporate advertising department. Employers may want that experience to be in a specific field, such as health care, retail sales or banking.
Full-time job openings posted on Careerbuilder in May 2010 reported salaries ranging from $75,000 to $105,000 for senior copywriters. Those working on a contract basis could earn $30 to $50 an hour.
