Barbados' beaches, sunny skies and tropical weather make it a popular vacation destination. Barbados is the easternmost Caribbean island. The island was created through a collision between the Atlantic crustal and Caribbean plates. Coral formed around the island because of a volcanic eruption, which makes the island geologically very unique. The weather in Barbados tends to remain fairly constant throughout the year, with May featuring warm temperatures, plenty of sunlight and relatively little precipitation.

  1. Climate Changes

    • Climate changes such as sea level rise and periods of drought are common depending on the region of Barbados. Bridgetown is especially at risk, as are Holetown and beachfront hotels, apartments and houses. If weather systems do develop they can cause flooding to these low-lying areas.

    Sunlight and Humidity

    • According to the BBC, the month of May brings an average of nine hours of sunlight to Barbados. Discomfort from heat and humidity is higher than the December to March period. The relative humidity stays relatively constant, at around 68 percent.

    Average Temperature

    • The average temperature in Barbados stays pretty consistent throughout the day. In the early morning hours, the average low is around 82 F. During midday, the temperature rises to an average of 85 F. By evening, the temperature goes back down to around 80 degrees.

    Rain

    • May is the end of the dry season for Barbados. Precipitation is most likely to occur in the early morning hours, around 2:00 a.m. The least likely time for rain is around 5:00 p.m. There is usually a 15% average chance of rain at 2:00 a.m. During May, the rain isn't usually accompanied by thunderstorms. The month averages nine wet or rainy days.

    Wind/Hurricane

    • Barbados is relatively flat. The central highland region of the island rises to 1,100 feet above sea level, but most of the rest of the island is fairly uniformly flat. During May, trade winds help to keep the heat and humidity in a more comfortable range; Bridgetown is somewhat more sheltered from wind. The official beginning of hurricane season is June 1, though it is possible (but highly unlikely) that a hurricane can develop during the month of May.
