About Bose Audio Systems

Famous for the revolutionary acoustic waveguide technology, Bose audio systems are designed to provide full, rich sound quality, all contained in one simple compact unit. This eliminates the need for the usual large stereo components that were previously required--such as speakers--to achieve the wide range of frequencies found in a song or in instruments. Bose now offers a wide variety of audio systems and accessories.

  1. History

    • In 1964, Amar G. Bose founded the Bose Corporation. At that time, Bose was a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor of electrical engineering. Not satisfied with the technical specifications of stereo systems on the market, Bose decided to create better sound through research. In 1968, research led to the trademarked 901 Direct/Reflecting speaker system. In 1993, the compact Wave Radio was invented, soon followed by the Wave Radio/CD. Acoustic waveguide technology was used to create a full, rich sound.

    Acoustic Technology

    • Using the acoustic waveguide of a flute as inspiration, engineers aimed for the same type of room-filling sound that is produced by a small breath of air on a flute. By mounting a loudspeaker within a tube, it was discovered that the mechanical properties of the loudspeaker could be matched. The length of the tube was a problem, but it was determined that a waveguide, several feet long, could be woven to fit within a briefcase-sized enclosure, while still delivering sound with more clarity than traditional stereo components.

    Significance

    • After extensive research in the field of psycho-acoustics and speaker design, a large rack of components--in the traditional speaker system--was no longer necessary to create the reproduction of high-quality, live music that a Bose audio system could provide. A small driver could be used to produce a clear sound that is free of distortion.

    Function

    • Originally designed as a compact home audio system, Bose now offers professional audio sound systems. These custom-designed audio systems are found in performance centers, restaurants, retail shops, hotels and auditoriums. Additionally, Bose has five distinct audio systems for use on the stage, as well as loudspeakers, controllers and accessories.

    Features

    • Bose innovation has created a wide variety of ways to use its audio systems in the home. Music can be played with the wave system from your computer. Wirelessly, a digital music system is available that can be used with an iPod and an iPhone. There is also a home theater speaker system, as well as a variety of headphones, including acoustic noise-canceling headphones and mobile in-ear headsets.
