What Is Phentermine 30?

Phentermine 30 is a prescription medication that is in the class of medications called anorectics, which are used to treat obesity. Phentermine 30 simply means that the dosage of medication in the pill is 30 mg. It is not clear how this medication or other drugs in this class work. Though they do suppress appetite, it may be that other body systems, such as metabolic or central nervous, are also affected.

  1. Prescribing Criteria

    • Phentermine is a short-term treatment intervention that should be used in addition to a change in diet and activity level. It is usually only prescribed for individuals with serious and persistent obesity. The indicators of this would be a high body mass index (BMI) over 30 or those with a BMI over 27 but with other health problems such as hypertension or high cholesterol.

    Clinical Trials

    • According to the Drugs website, short-term clinical trials found that obese adults treated with anorectic drugs lost more weight on average than their placebo-taking counterparts. However, this increase was only a fraction of a pound a week more. Most of the weight loss difference happened in the first week of therapy. It should be noted that these studies were short term, when usual obesity studies are often conducted over years.

    Considerations

    • There are individuals who should not take phentermine. The eMedTV website reports some of these include those with advanced arteriosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and glaucoma. In addition, since phentermine is considered an addictive drug because of its similarities to amphetamines, it should not be prescribed to those with a history of drug abuse. This is not an exhaustive list. Individuals interested in taking this should give a clear medical history to their provider in order to avoid any possible negative health interactions.

    Dosing

    • When taking phentermine, you need to take it as prescribed in order for it to be effective. It comes in tablet and capsule form. In capsule form it will be phentermine 30. However, in tablet it is 37.5 mg (the base is still 30 mg). Take it once a day either before breakfast or two hours after. Some people do need to split the dose up for it to be more effective. However, it should not be taken too late in the day or it can interfere with your sleep.

    Warnings and Reminders

    • It is important you remain in contact with your physician while using this medication. If you notice any side effects or health changes, discuss them with her. Remember that phentermine is a short-term tool and needs to be used in conjunction with behavioral changes. These include exercising at least three times a week in a way that increases your heart rate (cardio) and eating a balanced, reduced-calorie diet.
