Ninja Combat Training

They appear in countless video games as singular shadow warriors capable of cutting swaths through hordes of enemies. They appear as stock antagonists in B-grade martial arts films. The modern perception of the ninja, medieval Japan's secret agents and espionage operatives, has become shrouded with legends of inhuman combat skill and myths of supernatural powers. The ninja had an extensive combat training regimen that aided in creating his feared reputation.

  1. Misconceptions

    • Despite endless pop culture portrayals of the ninja as black-clad assassins sneaking through a castle or village in the dead of night to make a kill, ninjas would stake out their target for weeks or months to determine his routine. Then they would dress in the clothing of a person whom the target would expect to be present, such as a gardener or in the case of kunoichi, the female ninja, a hired courtesan.

    Weaponry

    • The ninja used a variety of weapons in combat, ranging from conventional swords and daggers to farming implements such as the kunai. The kunai, rather than being a wedge-like dagger as shown in media, has greater similarity to a trowel and was used for wedging into walls. Kusari-gama, or a sickle attached to a weighted chain, could entangle an enemy from several feet away before killing with the blade of the sickle.
The most iconic of ninja weaponry, the shuriken, could be used as a throwing weapon but did not always take the form of a star.

    Unarmed Combat

    • The ninja, along with other martial artists, trained in taijutsu, a curriculum of techniques that focus on unarmed combat. According to Japan 101, taijutsu has several sub-disciplines: koppo-jutsu, for breaking bones; koshi-jutsu, for pressure points and nerve strikes; taihen-jutsu, for evasion and breakfalls; dakentai-jutsu, for striking techniques; and jutai-jutsu, for joint locks and throws. Ninjas referred to their unarmed combat as taijutsu partially to avoid drawing attention to their own art.

    Stealth Tactics

    • In addition to conventional weapons combat and unarmed combat, the ninja used misdirection and stealth to create an aura of fear and confusion around their target and make the kill easier to perform. From childhood, ninjas trained to use fire, tree foliage, water and the surrounding earth to their advantage either as camouflage or as means of attack. For example, a ninja could set a fire to draw people away or to do damage to a structure, or hide underwater or in plant foliage.

    Ninjutsu Today

    • The Bujinkan headed by Soke Masaaki Hatsumi, teaches the use of a variety of martial arts weaponry, such as the spear, sword, staff and sickle. Bujinkan, according to the Dayton Bujinkan Dojo, has more than 2,000 certified instructors worldwide.
