Important Information About Adobe Photoshop thumbnail
Photoshop can be used for many purposes.

Adobe Photoshop is one of the premier graphics programs in the world. Is has been used for years by graphic artist to carry out a variety or projects, from photo editing and retouching to web page design. With each new release of Photoshop, Adobe adds new features and often expands the old ones. There are several important points to keep in mind when working in Photoshop.

  1. Raster

    • Photoshop produces images that are raster based, meaning the images are made up of individual dots caller pixels. The advantage with using this type of image is that the images can be highly detailed and complex, like a photograph. The disadvantages are that the file size is often quite large and the image are not infinitely enlargeable, unlike vector based graphics which produce small image files but can be enlarged with no loss of resolution.

    History

    • Photoshop comes with a "History" tab that contains a chronological list of the actions that you have taken while working on the current document. If you do not like a particular action taken several steps back, you can go back and do things differently. But keep in mind that the history will not save with the document, meaning when you reopen a document you cannot back out of changes you made before saving it.

    Layers

    • One of the most important aspects of Photoshop is the "Layers" panel. The ability to place new elements in a design on separate layers allows them to be edited separately, meaning that changes made to one layer will have no impact on changes made to another.

    Selection Choices

    • Photoshop comes with a number of "Selection" tools, such as the "Lasso" tool and the "Polygonal" tool. While these are the first selection tools a new user might use, they are not the most accurate. Photoshop users can use the "pen" tool to draw a path around an object and then turn this into a selection. They can also use the "Quick Mask" feature to "Paint" a selection onto the canvas. Both of the methods can produce more accurate selections.

    Animation

    • In versions of Photoshop before CS3, users who wanted to use Photoshop images to cerate animation were forced to export these images to ImageReady, which was a companion program that shipped with Photoshop. But with CS3, Adobe incorporated the animation functions and timeline directly into the program. It can be accessed by going to "Windows" in the menu and clicking "Animation.'
