Blue Cross Blue Shield & Pre-Existing Conditions

Historically, Blue Cross Blue Shield, a major health insurance provider in the United States, could increase premiums, or even deny coverage, to an applicant who had a pre-existing condition. It did not matter whether the condition was short term, such as a pregnancy, or life-threatening, such as cancer. All that changed with the passage of the Affordable Care Act.

Pre-Existing Condition Clauses

As of January 1, 2014, the problem of obtaining health insurance with a pre-existing condition no longer exists. With a goal of making health insurance available and affordable to everyone, the Affordable Care Act prohibits all health insurance companies, including Blue Cross Blue Shield, from charging more or denying health insurance coverage based on the applicant’s medical history.
