Prior to 1999, the Mercury Cougar looked like a Ford Thunderbird

The Mercury Cougar had been produced for more than 30 years until 1997. Re-introduced in 1999, it was styled differently than the previous years in an effort to revive the model. Unlike the older Thunderbird look and style, the 1999 Cougar was a compact sports coupe with a hatchback. The design and engine was based on the Mercury Mystique and Ford Contour. The model was a two-door, four passenger vehicle. It came in the I4 and the V6 trims.

In 2001 a brake light switch recall, an alternator cable to the battery and an electrical system recall were issued. A gasoline fuel systems recall was issued in 2004. In 2006, a recall to replace the hydraulic brake master cylinder was issued. As of March 2010 the last recall in 2008 was for the suspension.
