Heartgard Deworming Medication

Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors are at higher risk for parasites like heartworm.

Any dog that spends time outside is at risk for being bit by a mosquito. Since mosquitoes carry parasites like worms, this can also put that dog at risk for heartworm. Heartworms attack a dog's heart and can be fatal. Medications like Heartgard are designed to prevent that outcome.

  1. Heartworm

    • Heartworms are actually a breed of roundworm, and are classified as parasites. They live in a dog's heart and reproduce quickly. It's quite possible for a heartworm to live in the chambers of a dog's heart and extend through the valves and into the pulmonary arteries. The worm disrupts the function of a dog's heart and leads to coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue. Left untreated, heartworm will kill a dog.

    Treatments

    • Once a dog has heartworm, a veterinarian will treat him with weekly doses of an arsenic-based medication to kill the worm. Some serious cases require surgical treatment. A better option, particularly for dogs who are at risk for mosquito bites and heartworm, is a schedule of prevention. Drugs like Heartgard seek to "shield" a dog from heartworm to prevent the problem from occurring.

    Heartgard

    • Heartgard is a well-established brand of preventative medication. It works to protect a dog from parasite infestation with a consistent low dose of deworming medication. This constant level of medication kills any worms that find their way into a dog's body before they can settle into the heart and begin feeding off a dog's blood.

    Heartgard Characteristics

    • Unlike many medications, Heartgard comes in a form that is appetizing to dogs. The medication is hidden in chewable beef-flavored treats. Heartgard comes in different dosages, depending on a dog's size and situation, and is fed on a monthly schedule. This medication has proven to be safe for all dogs.

    Considerations

    • Like all medications, Heartgard can cause side effects. In rare cases, digestive and neurological side effects have occurred. Dogs on Heartgard should be monitored by the vet in regard to their reactions and dosages, to keep them safe. Heartgard is preventative, and is not effective in a dog who already has heartworm.
