School bus safety is important for both drivers and students. Since more school age children are transported in buses instead of personal automobiles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed a program to implement bus safety. Buses are safer for the transportation of children than any other means.

  1. At the Bus Stop

    • It is important for students to walk to the bus stop, never run. The students should use the sidewalk and arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus arrives. It is imperative for students to stay back 10 feet from the bus to stay out of the "Danger Zone." Students should not talk to strangers while waiting for the bus. Students should also wait until the red lights are flashing before walking towards the bus.

    Getting on the Bus

    • Students need to be aware of other students when getting on the bus, and allow younger, smaller students to enter the bus first. Students should hold onto the handrail when using the steps on the bus, watch each step and face forward to prevent falling. Students should not hurry or push other students.

    On the Bus

    • Students should go straight to a seat, never remain standing, and should not talk loudly and distract the bus driver. To get the bus driver's attention, the student should raise his hand and wait until the bus stops. Trash should be kept out of aisles. In the event of an emergency, students should listen to the driver and follow instructions.

    Exit the Bus

    • Do not allow students to run when exiting the bus. Students need to move away from the bus at least three steps and continue walking in the direction of home. Never allow students to return on the bus if they forget something. Also, make sure students know not to pick up anything that has fallen in the path of the bus. If a student must cross the street, make sure he knows to cross only in the front of the bus. Students should also avoid the "Danger Zone" and stay back 10 feet.

    Driver

    • Drivers should stop directly in front of the children waiting for the bus. After they exit the bus, the driver should make sure all children are away from the bus before moving, and use the safety signals including lights and the safety bar. Drivers should only open the door after all cars are stopped. A bus driver should be defensive and watch for other drivers at all times and never talk to kids while driving to avoid distraction.
