What Is a Conveyor Dryer?

The conveyor belt has been an important part of industry since its beginnings in the 18th century. Using a conveyor belt to dry items is a more recent invention; however, it is a crucial step in screen-printing shirts as well as in the manufacture of many food items.

  1. Definition

    • A conveyor dryer is a machine designed to dry items slowly as they move along a conveyor belt. The heat used to dry, as well as the speed, can be adjusted by the machine's operator. Conveyor dryers are considered commercial equipment and are not for home use.

    Uses of Conveyor Dryers

    • Conveyor dryers may be used to dry food items as well as other items. One popular non-food use for conveyor dryers is the screen-printed shirt industry.

    Types of Conveyor Dryers

    • Conveyor dryers, like other pieces of commercial equipment, come in different sizes and wattage levels to meet the needs of different companies. Variables such as belt width, oven length and wattage determine how efficiently one will be able to dry items. Conveyor dryers with wider belts, larger ovens and higher wattage are therefore more expensive.

How A Food Conveyor Dryer Works

    • Wet foods are placed on conveyors that have holes. This way heated air can move around the food from all directions. As the food moves across the conveyor system, it is dried. When used for vegetable drying, the conveyors may be in a "stacked" formation, where the wet food starts at the top and gradually moves back and forth down the system of conveyors until dry.

How A Textile Conveyor Dryer Works

    • Textile conveyor dryers work by slowly moving the garment under a heat source until drying of the ink is complete. There is some trial and error involved in this, as scorching and under-drying are both possible. The heat source may be an infrared heat panel or a hybrid of infrared and convection for better heat circulation.
