Sleek trim of the 1969 Z/28 Camaro

In 1967, GM first produced the Camaro to compete with the Ford Mustang. By 1969 this sleek coupe was one of the most popular of the muscle cars, due to its superb handling and sculpted design. The RPO Z28 Camaro Special Performance Package on the 1969 Camaro allowed customers the option to upgrade performance, horsepower, and style. According to the National Auto Dealers Association,, the manufacturer's suggested retail price on a standard Z/28 was $3,184 when it was introduced for the 1969 model year.

  1. Body Features

    • The Z/28 option has been available on many Camaro production years. There are a few key features that distinguish the 1969 version from other years. A 1969 Camaro sports the same first generation F-body as the 1967 and 1968 Camaro. The body was redesigned in 1970 to the sleeker second generation F-body. In 1969 the Camaro was modified from the previous year to appear longer and lower. It has a distinct midline running delicately down the length of the car. Brake lights were changed from two to three sections.

    Z/28 Option

    • The Z/28 option is identified most easily from other 1969 Camaros by its emblems. A red and chrome Z/28 emblem is mounted off center of the egg-crate grille. A similar emblem can be found just behind the headlines on the front fenders, and one more centered between the two taillights. The Z/28 was available only as a coupe.

    Engine and Transmission

    • The 1969 Z/28 power option included an upgrade to a powerful 302 cubic inch, 5.0 liter V-8 engine, also called a DZ engine. The stock transmission is a 4-speed manual Muncie transmission. The horsepower is conservatively rated at 290 at 5,800 RPM, though some tests have produced up to 400 HP. Torque is 290 ft. lbs. at 4,200 RPM. Engine performance is enhanced by the upgraded cooling system, which includes a heavy-duty radiator and temperature-controlled fan. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds with an estimated maximum speed of 120 mph. The Z/28 runs a quarter mile in 15.12 seconds at 94.8 mph.

    Suspension and Handling

    • The initial design of the Camaro included computer technology to develop the steering and handling. The result is a unibody set on a specialized suspension, all geared toward offering increased handling and a smoother ride. Single leaf rear springs and a tight steering system drove the 15 x 7 inch Rally Wheels on Goodyear wide tread E70-15 tires.

    Other specs

    • Additional specifications of a 1969 Z/28 Camaro include a wheelbase of 108 inches. Size is 186 inches long, 72.5 inches wide, and 51.4 inches high. The weight is 3,525 lbs. The 1969 production totalled 19,014 for the Z/28.
