Students undergo health appraisals.

Student health is the concern of educational providers because poor health can interfere with educational progress. Good health involves not just physical wellness but also mental, and social well-being of the student. Schools comply with regulations set by Education Law and the Commissioner of Education. Each state has different regulations and guidelines for professionals administering the student health appraisal.

  1. Purpose

    • The student health appraisal serves many purposes. It allows educators to be aware of any possible health issues that might affect the student's ability to participate in programs. Any potential diseases or health concerns can be brought to the attention of the student's family. It also gives health care professionals the opportunity to counsel the student and their family in regards to any concerns they may have.

    Examination Requirements

    • The required examinations and grades they are required in vary from state to state. The Center for Health and Health Care Centers in Schools offers a listing of many state guidelines for school health services. In Pennsylvania children are required to have medical screenings before entering school for the first time, and in the sixth, and 11th grade. New York state requires children to have physical screenings before entering school for the first time, and in first, third, seventh and 10th grade.

    Student Health History

    • One component of the student health appraisal is medical history. It covers prenatal history, developmental history, immunizations, significant accidents or injuries, childhood illness, prior hospitalizations, allergies, medications used, surgery or chronic illness. Family medical history is also recorded in addition to information about the age and health of parents and siblings. This information is obtained through an interview or through a written questionnaire.

    Screenings

    • Preventative screenings for scoliosis, hearing and vision are given as part of the general student health appraisal. Height and weight are recorded to ensure a student has a healthy body mass index for their age. Blood pressure is checked and sometimes urine samples are taken to check for glucose and protein levels.

    Professional Evaluators

    • Health care screenings are conducted by a licensed physician, registered nurse or nurse practitioner. Screenings can be done by the primary care physician of the child and any necessary information submitted to school after. Any information obtained is confidential and educational staff are notified only when necessary to adjust any curriculum to accommodate a child's needs.
