About Smashbox thumbnail
Smashbox is best known for its makeup.

In 1991, Dean and Davis Factor, brothers and great-grandsons of the legendary Max Factor, decided to combine Dean's business savvy and Davis' skill and renown as a photographer to open Smashbox Photo Studios. In addition to being a photo studio, Smashbox has grown to include a modeling agency, production company, makeup line and sustainable clothing line. Smashbox Studios has also been the home of the Mercedes Benz LA Fashion Week since 2003, as well as a venue for various fashion, charity and celebrity events. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Smashbox Studios

    • Smashbox Studios is the home for co-founder and Chief Creative Officer Davis Factor's photography work. He is one of the top celebrity and fashion photographers in the world. His work has appeared in "Vanity Fair," "Italian Vogue," "Allure," "Harper's Bazaar," "Marie Claire" and "Esquire." Smashbox Studios expanded to three locations before forming a creative partnership with Quixote Studios to offer more studio space as well as a wider array of film and TV production capabilities.

    LA Fashion Week

    • In the early 2000s, IMG, the powerhouse production group responsible for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York, was looking into expanding into Los Angeles. Smashbox had already been doing its own fashion show featuring local and national designers. After sponsoring a show on its own in 2002, IMG combined with Smashbox Studios to offer a combined Mercedes-Benz LA Fashion Week.

    Smashbox Cosmetics

    • Most people are familiar with Smashbox from its highly regarded cosmetics line, used by women around the world. Started in 1996, Smashbox Cosmetics grew out of a repeated call for a house cosmetics line for photo studio artists. It is known as being very fashion-forward, but wearable, makeup, since its products are used and inspired by professional makeup artists. Davis Factor, along with the creative staff, plumbs the industry for the best trends and looks, and uses them as inspiration for the line's colors and products.

    Awards and Distinctions

    • Smashbox Cosmetics has won numerous industry awards, including multiple "Self" Magazine Healthy Beauty Awards, Glam.com Awards, "Allure" Magazine Editor's Choice Awards and Best of Sephora awards. It is well known in the industry for its Photo Finish foundation primers, O-Glow lip and cheek colors and Photo Finish lipstick. The company's cosmetics are cruelty-free; instead of being tested on animals they are tested on makeup artists and staffers. They also feature recyclable products packaging made from sustainable paper and soy ink. Most of its products are irritation- and gluten-free.

    Customer Service

    • Smashbox considers itself not only committed to offering professional quality products, but also to providing the education to use them well. It offers special programs to professional makeup artists; its website features instructions, videos and an option to ask questions of staff makeup artists. Smashbox perks to buyers include a frequent buyer discount program, "lunchtime" shopping promotion with a free gift, samples with orders and free shipping.
