What is Lustra AF?
Lustra AF is the brand name of a prescription topical solution that is used to treat skin discolorations, commonly called dark spots, skin spots, age spots or liver spots. Lustra AF is a cream and contains 4 percent hydroquinone; it acts as a lightening agent when applied to the skin. In addition to the lightening agent, Lustra AF contains a sunblock agent that prevents discoloration from returning.

Significance
-
Lustra AF is manufactured by Medicis Pharmaceuticals. Lustra AF contains antioxidants, glycolic acid and moisturizers, ingredients that make it an effective treatment for improving the appearance and texture of dark skin spots. In Volume 8-2003 of Skin Therapy Letter, Dr. A.K. Gupta and J.E. Ryder summarize studies that showed patients using Lustra AF had better improvement in skin texture and appearance than patents using other topical prescriptions.
Background
-
Skin spots occur on the skin because of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the body overproduces melanin, a pigment that gives skin its natural color and protects it from ultraviolet sun rays. Skin spots can be due to sun exposure, taking birth control pills or hormone medication or pregnancy. Lustra AF works on the skin discoloration and causes the treated areas to turn lighter.
-
Function
-
Lustra AF is applied directly on skin spots, freckles, mottled skin and other skin discolorations. Lustra AF inhibits the furthur production of melanin in the skin discolorations and helps the body to reabsorb the existing melanin. It also blocks ultraviolet sunlight that leads to overproduction of skin melanin. Lustra AF claims to cause skin discolorations to appear lighter and skin texture to become smoother and more supple within two to four months.
Warning
-
Lustra AF is for external use only and is only available by prescription from a doctor. Apply Lustra AF directly to the skin discoloration and not the surrounding skin. Avoid getting Lustra AF in the eyes and mouth. For a number of users, Lustra AF causes slight redness and irritation to the skin. Some users report more severe reactions such as blisters and swelling. If a severe reaction occurs, stop using the medication and contact your doctor.
Considerations
-
Lustra AF contains sunblock but should not be used as a primary sunblock on other skin areas. Avoid strong sunlight when using Lustra AF. Avoid using it on irritated, dry or chapped skin and do not use it on cuts or wounds. Also avoid using perfumes and soaps that irritate the skin as well as skin products with dyes and astringents. Lustra AF is generally used twice a day or as directed by your doctor.
