Drinking a glass or two of wine, beer, or other alcoholic beverage can help you relax and take away your inhibitions. Having a few drinks each week or even one or two a day isn't a problem for most people, and some studies have shown it can reduce heart attacks and atherosclerosis. However, if you find you're drinking more than you should, you may want to break a bad habit before it gets worse.

  1. Support Your Body While Detoxing From Alcohol

    • Be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to help keep your body hydrated and flush toxins. A good diet to follow would be plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates. Be sure to include whole grains such as brown rice and oats, and legumes like beans and lentils to be sure you're getting enough fiber as this helps to bind toxins and eliminate them from the body.

Flax Seed Oil Can Boost Detox Efforts

    • Flax seed oil is rich in alpha linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fat. Just 2 tablespoons a day gives you nearly 150 percent of the RDA for omega-3 fatty acids. It's a natural anti-inflammatory and can help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer, while helping to lower high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

The oil can boost your detox efforts by helping to decrease inflammation in the lining of the stomach and other tissues, and reducing the stress on your body caused by the detoxification process. Flax seed oil has also been shown to reduce anxiety and headaches.

    Flax Seed Oil Dosage

    • Liquid form: Take 1 to 2 tablespoons a day. You can add this to your foods and smoothies, or pour it over salads.

Capsule form: If you don't like the taste of flax seed oil, take two 1,000 mg capsules daily.

    Symotoms of Alcohol Detoxing

    • As your body cleanses itself of toxins, you may notice many, some, or no symptoms at all from your detox efforts. The healthier a lifestyle you follow, the easier it is to cleanse your body with fewer side effects. Some symptoms you may notice are alcohol cravings, dry mouth, weakness, depression, insomnia, upset stomach, fatigue, headache, irritability and lack of appetite. Symptoms vary from one person to the next and also depend on how long you've been drinking and how much.

    How Long to Detox

    • Again, this depends on how long you've been drinking, how often, and how much. As a good rule of thumb you may want to continue your detoxification program for at least 6 to12 weeks, allowing the body to completely eliminate toxins stored in the fat cells.
