Taurinate Side Effects

If you have low naturally occurring levels of magnesium, you may be treated with magnesium taurinate, often referred to simply as taurinate. Use of this product may result in a variety of side effects depending on the dose you take. Never take magnesium taurinate without first consulting your physician, as it can lead to unwanted and possibly dangerous side effects.

Taurinate Usage

  • Magnesium taurinate is a natural supplement that is used to increase the levels of magnesium in the body. It is often used specifically to treat individuals with a natural magnesium deficiency, heartburn or constipation. According to Rxlist.com, it is also effective for the treatment of a type of irregular heartbeat known as torsades de pointes. Discuss other possible uses of this supplement with your doctor.

Less Severe Side Effects

  • Regular use of taurinate may result in common side effects that include upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and mild headache. These side effects are minor and are no reason for concern. If any of them worsen or become persistent, contact your doctor immediately and stop using taurinate.

Severe Side Effects

  • In rare cases, severe side effects may arise when taurinate is taken in larger doses than recommended. These side effects may include low blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, coma, confusion and slow breathing. In rare and extreme cases, using taurinate in large amounts can result in death. Be sure to always follow the manufacturer's label or your doctor's guidelines for the correct dosing information. If you experience any of the preceding side effects, seek immediate medical attention.

Drug Interactions

  • Taurinate may react negatively with the following medications: aminoglycoside antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, tetracycline antibiotics, bisphosphonates, calcium channel blockers, muscle relaxants, and potassium-sparing diuretics. Check with your doctor for a complete list of drug interactions and always be sure to alert your doctor to your current use of medications before using taurinate.

Precautions and Warnings

  • It is extremely important that you strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage amounts in order to avoid severe side effects. If you have had a history of heart or kidney problems, discuss the possible dangers of using taurinate with your doctor. Using supplemental magnesium, of any type, in doses larger than 350 milligrams per day is unsafe.
