Verizon is a leading telecommunications company that offers a host of services, including residential landline phone service. Verizon's telephone service provides a wealth of calling options for subscribers through their flat-rate local, long distance and international calling plans. The company's tiered calling plans are aimed at nearly every budget level.

Benefits

  • Verizon home telephone service offers landline telephone access, and because the service is not Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), it is not subject to interrupted service due to power failures or lost Internet connections. While the service is offered through individual monthly calling plans, it can also be bundled with Internet and TV service for a discounted price.

Unlimited Calling

  • Society's connectivity has increased the need for local and long distance calling. And the increased competition among the many telecommunications companies has driven down cost. Verizon's Freedom Unlimited plans offer unlimited calling throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. As of October 2009, the Freedom Essential Plan offers local and long distance calling for $54.99 per month and it contains popular calling features, including voicemail, caller ID and call waiting. The Freedom Value Plan also offers unlimited, local and long distance calling at $49.99 per month; but, it does not include the additional calling features.

Local Calling

  • Verizon's Flat-Rate Calling and Local Measured Service is offered to subscribers who only need a local calling plan. As of October 2009, the Flat Rate Calling service ranges from $16.85 to $24.14 per month and includes unlimited direct-dial calling to numbers within the subscriber's local calling area. The local calling area is defined as telephone numbers within 12-miles of the subscriber. Zone Usage Measurement (ZUM) calls or calls made to numbers that are 13 to 16 miles from the user's home exchange, are billed at additional per minute rates that vary depending on time restrictions.

The Local Measured Service plan provides local calling for $11.80 to $16.03 per month. Calls can be made within the subscriber's 12-mile calling area and ZUM calling is also available. Unlike the Flat-Rate plan, all Local Measured Service calls are charged at per minute rates that vary according to the time of day the call is made.

International Calling

  • International calling was once a luxury of the well-connected, now it is a necessity for many consumers. Verizon's international calling plans allow subscribers to call overseas through reasonably priced, flat-rate and per minute calling services. Verizon's Single Rate international calling plans provide flat-rate calling to 118 countries in 300 and 500 minute blocks that are billed at $14.99 or $19.99 per month, as of October 2009. The International Choice Plan with City Rates is an ideal choice for consumers who need city-specific calling. The plan offers calling to cities in 250 countries and is billed at $4.99 per month, plus additional per minute charges.
