Modalert Side Effects

Modalert is a medication used in the treatment of sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder and obstructive sleep apnea. The drug works by stimulating the brain of the user to prevent excessive daytime sleepiness and a lack of alertness. As is the case with most sleep medications, there are a number of side effects associated with use.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Some of these side effects include dizziness, difficulty sleeping, nausea, vomiting, headache, nervousness, anxiety, constipation, weakness and diarrhea. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using this medication, they only affect a small number of people.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects associated with using Modalert. Some of these side effects include confusion, depression, sudden hallucinations, agitation, abnormal thoughts, allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, tightening of the chest, skin rash and hives. These side effects are also very rare and do not affect a large number of users.

    Important Safety Information

    • While Modalert does promote wakefulness and alertness in users, it is strongly recommended that users that suffer from narcolepsy never operate any type of machinery (including an automobile) throughout the course of their treatment. If you experience sever itching, swelling or burning, it is possible that you may be having an allergic reaction and should seek immediate medical attention.

    Use

    • Always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in dosages larger than what has been recommended on the label. The drug is administered in pill form in dosages of 200 mg and 400 mg daily. The first dosage should always be taken in the morning and can be taken either with or without food. Always store this medication at room temperature and away from sources of moisture.

    Warning

    • If you experience any of the above side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

If an overdose is suspected, contact the poison control center and head directly to the nearest emergency room.

Modalert is used to treat the above ailments only and should not be used for any other medical purpose unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.
