Sharp Vs. Samsung LCD

Japanese electronics firm Sharp and South Korean manufacturer Samsung are each involved in the design and production of liquid crystal displays, or LCDs. Each company produces a wide range of LCD televisions and monitors for commercial and personal use, competing directly with other rivals such as LG, Insignia, Panasonic and Sony.

  1. Sharp LCD History

    • Sharp has a long history of producing LCD displays. In the 1980s Sharp was the first to sell an LCD television. In 1987 it introduced a small (3-inch) portable LCD TV. This marked a major step toward LCD technology surpassing plasma display technology to emerge as the standard for televisions, computer monitors and other applications in the 1990s and 2000s. Sharp introduced its first wall-mounted LCD TV in 1991.

    Samsung LCD History

    • Samsung established a research department to investigate LCD technology in 1991. In 1993 it produced a 9.3-inch LCD display for laptop computers. Better and larger LCD displays followed, including a 21.3-inch monitor in the mid-1990s. In the early-2000s, Samsung's LCD division was split between ever-larger screens, like a 40-inch display introduced in 2001 and very small screens for cell phones and other hand held devices. Today Samsung is the world's largest maker of LCD displays.

    Sharp Products

    • Sharp has been selling the AQUOS line of LCD TVs since 2001. Smaller models (up to 29 inches) are not considered part of the AQUOS line. Sharp's smallest standard LCD TV is a 19-inch model, and its largest either of two 65-inch AQUOS models. Most of Sharp's LCDs 32- to 52-inch range and use a widescreen format. Many feature high-definition resolution as well. Sharp is not a major player on the LCD computer monitor market, producing only a limited series of professional monitors for commercial use.

    Samsung Products

    • Samsung currently sells its LCD TVs as the 3,4,5,6 and 7 Series. Higher numbered series indicate larger screen sizes, more advanced features and a higher price tag. The 3 Series features 19-inch high-definition models (all of Samsung's LCD TVs are HD). The 4 and 5 Series include models up to 52 inches. The 6 and 7 Series LCD TVs have higher contrast ratios and range up to 65 inches. Samsung also produces an extensive line of LCD monitors, which are classified into Essential, Business, Premium, Professional and Specialty categories.

    Pricing Comparison

    • Sharp and Samsung produce many similar products in the LCD market. As new technologies and features are developed each company is quick to adopt it in new models. Among smaller LCD TVs, Sharp's models are generally more expensive with a 19-inch model selling for around $350 and a 32-inch TVs starting at $650. Samsung's 19-inch TVs are $280 and its entry-level 32-inch TV costs only $550. However, Samsung produces some premium LCD TVs that are higher priced than even Sharp's most expensive models, including a $6,000 price tag for its 65-inch TV. Sharp's 65-inch model sells for $4,000.
