Side Effects of Isotroin

The American Academy of Dermatology describes acne as a medical condition that affects your skin, clogging pores, causing blemishes and forming large masses known as nodules. For many people, cleansers and creams are adequate to clear up acne, but if you have large nodules that do not respond to conventional treatment methods, a stronger oral medication may be necessary. Isotretonin, or Isotroin as it is called in Greece and India, is available through a prescription from your dermatologist. Despite its effectiveness, Isotroin is not for everyone as it presents several risks for side effects and complications in some patients. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Significance

    • Isotroin may cause minor and severe side effects. Unlike other drugs, the risks it poses are such that the Food and Drug Administration in the United States instituted a program called iPledge. The program requires users to read a warning pamphlet and consent to receive monthly medical checkups before being given a prescription for Isotroin. Women of child-bearing age must also have two pregnancy tests and use birth control during treatment as a part of iPledge. This high level of control over the drug in the United States speaks to the severity of the symptoms. Other countries do not have such regulations in place, however, which leads to the sale of Isotroin from Indian and Greek companies on the Internet. Before purchasing Isotroin, it is important to understand the possible complications associated with use of the drug.

    Common Side Effects

    • Some of the most common side effects have no long-term ramifications and are not serious in nature. Many patients taking the drug report dermatological side effects, including crusting, sensitivity to sunlight, peeling of skin on palms or the soles of feet, thinning hair and skin dryness. It is also common to experience dry eyes and for contacts to feel less comfortable. Mild headaches and stomach pains are also common side effects of Isotroin.

    Warning: Pregnancy

    • The FDA reports that Isotretinoin has the potential to cause a number of problems relating to pregnancy and childbirth. Possible complications and dangers to pregnant women are miscarriages, premature labor and death of the baby. Isotroin is also responsible for birth defects in some cases. Because of these risks, it is crucial that you do not become pregnant while taking the drug or for one month preceding and following your treatment.

    Warning: Psychological Side Effects

    • Isotroin has the potential to cause a number of very serious psychological side effects, including psychosis, severe depression and suicidal thoughts or actions. Symptoms of depression include sleeping too little or too much, difficulty concentrating, persistent negative thoughts, increases or decreases in appetite and a lack of energy. If you develop any signs of depression, become aggressive, begin to see or hear things that are not real or have thoughts of self-harm, seek immediate medical attention.

    Risks

    • Some patients develop cardiovascular side effects related to use of Isotroin, including heart palpitations, formation of blood clots and stroke. The drug also can increase triglyceride or fat levels in your blood, which contributes to clogging of the arteries and is dangerous for people with cardiovascular disease. Isotroin increases blood sugar levels, triggering the development of Type 2 diabetes in some patients. Serious neurological complications are another risk of Isotroin usage, including seizures and increased pressure in your skull.
