Unlike the Xbox 360's rival consoles, the PS3 and the Wii, it unfortunately does not come with a built-in wireless adapter. While Microsoft does provide an optional wireless adapter that can be separately purchased, it costs 100 dollars. A free and cheaper method of connecting an Xbox 360 game console to Xbox Live is through the use of a laptop. Proper installation of the network will allow gamers to get on Xbox Live anywhere that a WIFI signal is found.

    Identification

  1. The first step to connecting a laptop to an Xbox 360 is to identify all the proper equipment needed and exactly how to create a functioning network between the laptop and the Xbox 360. The following is required: an Ethernet cable, Xbox 360 game console and a laptop. The laptop must have an Ethernet input and wireless capabilities. While the laptop does not necessarily need a wireless adapter, it will if connecting to a WIFI signal.
  2. Function

  3. The network connection sent between an Xbox 360 and a laptop will function as a wireless adapter for the game console. Rather than spending money on a separate wireless adapter, the bridged network will create a port through the laptop for the Xbox 360 to gain Internet access. If the laptop has two Ethernet ports and connects to the Internet through an Ethernet signal, the laptop will act as a router.
  4. Considerations

  5. Some important considerations should be taken into account before attempting to create a network connection between the laptop and the Xbox 360 game console. To make the network connection work properly, the Windows firewall must be turned off so that the laptop can produce an Internet signal to the game console. There should not be any harm in doing this as long as nothing is being downloaded at the same time of the firewall disconnection.
  6. Network Connection

  7. The easiest way to connect your Xbox 360 to the Internet is simply through a network connection with your computer. Plug an Ethernet cable into the back of your Xbox 360 and into your computer that is wirelessly connected. If the computer is connected to the Internet through an Ethernet port, then an additional port needs to be available for the one directly connected to the Xbox 360. The computer will automatically see a connection between the Xbox 360 and itself. Click "Start," "Connect To" and then "Show All Connections." "Wireless Network Connection" should show up with a green signal next to it, which means it's active. Right-click the wireless network connection icon and select "Properties" then the "Advanced" tab. Select the check box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and that should create an Internet connection between the computer and Xbox 360 game console. Restart the Xbox 360 and the computer, and it should now have access to Xbox Live.
  8. Warning

  9. You also will have to turn off the Windows firewall to get the Internet connection to work. On the "Wireless Network Connection Properties" advanced tab, select "Settings" under Windows Firewall. Select the option that says "Off" and now the network between the computer and the Xbox 360 should work properly. Make sure you turn the firewall back on when not bridging a network between the console and the computer.
