Side Effects of Unisom

Save

Unisom, generically known as doxylamine, is a drug used as a short-term treatment for insomnia. As is the case with prescription drugs, Unisom may cause a number of side effects varying in severity based on the dose size and the individual.

Identification

  • Unisom is a non-prescription drug that helps to treat insomnia by reducing the level of histamine in the body. As an antihistamine, Unisom acts as a depressant to the central nervous system and induces a level of drowsiness to aid in falling asleep. Unisom is also frequently used in tandem with other medications to treat sneezing, watery eyes and itching caused by allergies.

Common Side Effects

  • Unisom may cause a number of common but minor side effects, according to Drugs.com. Side effects include: dry mouth, dizziness, dry throat and nose, nausea, stomach pain, constipation and the production of thick mucus in the throat. Although these side effects are often common and less serious than others, if one or several persist or intensify, seek immediate medical attention.

Serious Side Effects

  • Known serious side affects that Unisom may cause include: pounding or irregular heartbeat, hallucinations and confusion, irregular urination, easy bruising or bleeding, and severe dizziness. Severe allergic rash including severe swelling of the face may also occur with the use of Unisom. The preceding side effects are serious and should be treated with extreme immediacy. Do not hesitate to contact a doctor if one or multiple serious side effects arise.

Using Unisom

  • Unisom should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor. Do not alter the dose or the duration of the medication. Unisom can be taken with or without food. To help effectively aid in sleep, Unisom should be taken at least 30 minutes before sleep. If Unisom comes in chewable tablets, make sure to chew thoroughly to ensure the appropriate release of the medication. If results are not seen after two weeks of using the product, consult with your doctor.

Warning

  • Never take a double dose of Unisom to compensate for a missed dose. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after taking Unisom as marked drowsiness accompanies consumption. Avoid alcohol to reduce intensifying any side effects. Do not breast-feed or combine with any other over-the-counter sleep aids.
