Limewire Information

Limewire is a popular program used by people who download music, movies, programs and various other files. Limewire uses P2P file sharing, which is when files are shared by users without the use of a central server. Users on a network are able to share files directly distributed amongst each other without any form of security or centralized center to monitor the activity.

  1. Limewire Legal Downloading Issues

    • Although the Limewire program itself is legal to download, people have used the program for illegal purposes. In order to share copyrighted files, you must gain legal permission. It is also against the law to share pornographic files, especially those containing children.

    Limewire File Sharing Information

    • The official Limewire website states that "most popular files (audio, video, photographs, documents) are copyright protected and not authorized for sharing, distribution and/or downloading without further additional express authorization from the copyright owner." Even if you purchase and own a particular software, movie or CD it is illegal for you to distribute it via file sharing.

    Limewire Content Protection

    • Limewire uses a filter that sorts out copyrighted materials so that users cannot download them. It is possible to turn the filter off so that people can still download files illegally. Limewire says, it is "our goal is to eventually filter out all files that copyright owners do not wish to be shared with the P2P Network."

    Breaking The Law

    • If you choose to break the law and download illegally you may be sued by the copyright owner, charged a large sum of money and prosecuted by a court for your actions. It is possible for copyright owners, as well as various other agencies, to monitor the P2P network used by Limewire. P2P networks are public information, and all activity is traceable.

    Benefits of Limewire

    • Limewire can be used to access files that are not copyright protected. If used correctly, Limewire can be a fun program to operate. Limewire is available in basic and pro download forms. Limewire basic is free of charge, and as of September 2009, Limewire pro cost $34.95. Limewire pro offers faster download speeds as well as free technical support and free software updates for up to one year.
