Somac is a prescription drug that contains the active ingredient pantoprozole. Somac belongs to the family of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs work to lessen the amount of gastric acid produced by the stomach. This makes Somac an effective treatment for relieving the pain and discomfort of such stomach conditions in individuals with gastric or stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers. Somac is available in 20 mg and 40 mg tablets.

These may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and a feeling of general malaise along with fever, and skin problems such as swelling, blistering or peeling of the skin. There may be jaundice (yellowish discoloration of the skin and/or whites of the eyes) along with dark-colored urine. Other symptoms may include unusual bleeding or bruising, mouth ulcers, chills with fever, swelling of the legs, high blood pressure, anxiety, confusion and depression. Seek immediate medical attention for any of these symptoms.

An allergic reaction may be a rare but serious side effect. It is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms may include a rash or hives. There may also be swelling of the face, mouth, tongue or throat along with chest pain, shortness of breath and difficulty swallowing. Seek immediate emergency medical care for any of these symptoms.

Discuss your medical history with your doctor to include any medications you are taking. Anti-viral drugs such as atazanavir should not be taken when you are taking Somac. Discuss any allergies you may have and any history of liver or kidney diseases. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to get pregnant during the time you will be taking Somac.
