Quartz is a material chosen for countertops mostly because of its strength, durability and low maintenance. Only a few other materials found on the Earth are considered harder than quartz. But like anything used in building projects, quartz has advantages and disadvantages.
Quartz is a naturally occurring hard material. It grows in clusters and does not form into large blocks like other materials such as granite. Quartz countertops are engineered and formed into slabs. In the end, a quartz countertop will consist of about 93% quartz and 7% resins and pigment. Quartz is manufactured to be strong, dense and resistant to stain, mold and bacteria growth.
This type of countertop requires very little maintenance. Unlike many other materials, quartz is easy to clean. Almost any surface cleaner can be used to clean quartz because it is non-porous, meaning it won't absorb much of the product. Quartz countertops are resistant to staining and they rarely need to be sealed.
Quartz is extremely scratch- and heat-resistant, so it can take a considerable amount of wear and tear before it gets damaged. This material is available in a variety of colors and patterns, giving consumers considerable options. Quartz countertops can last a lifetime if they are not abused.
While there are few disadvantages in using quartz as a countertop, one obvious drawback is its weight. Quartz is a very heavy material and depending on the size, it will take several individuals to install a quartz countertop properly.
Another disadvantage is price. Quartz is one of the more costly options for countertops.
Quartz countertops are much harder than granite, marble and wood. Even though quartz countertops come in a range of colors and patterns, granite and marble offer more design choices.
A quartz countertop needs to be professionally installed, which can greatly increase the cost. On average, a quartz countertop can cost anywhere between $45 and $95 per square foot, installed. The total cost of installing a quartz countertop, of course, will depend on size.
