What Are the Main Parts of the Television?
As an electronic device, television has been with us since the 1930s when Dumont produced the first American cathode-ray tube (CRT) system for general sale. Between then and today, this integrated audio/video technology, and its consequent development of scripted and unscripted programming, has become a central element in the fabric of America's cultural history.

Cathode

The cathode in conjunction with the anode (see next section), creates a similar relationship to an electric circuit, wherein the unit offers a positive and a negative juxtaposition. In this case, the cathode serves as the negative component. Without getting too technical, the component encompasses a charged filament that, in turn, produces a stream of negative electrons.
Anode

The anode serves as the positive component inside the CRT. When the cathode produces its charged negative electron stream, the anode "attracts" the stream, and subsequently directs the stream on to the back of the CRT's screen.

Phosphor Screen

A phosphor screen produces the image that you see on the tube. The electron stream excites the phosphor coating on the CRT. The process is based on the fact that phosphor emits visible light whenever X-rays touch the coating.
Electron Beams

The beam emitted by the cathode/anode combination needs to be repeatedly refreshed at the back of the CRT tube in order to create meaningful images. In order to manage this beam, there are steering coils oriented to both the horizontal and vertical magnetic axis. By managing the magnetic value of each of these coils, the beam "scans" various bits of information and displays it on the screen.
Shadow Mask

The shadow mask refines the position of beam elements as they are displayed on the screen. This is particularly important for color televisions, because each color is represented by a beam. In order to produce a clear image, the green, red and blue beams must be pointed at the screen at a specific position horizontally and vertically to avoid conflicting with the adjacent beams.
