Samsung and Sony are two large names in the LCD TV business. When you walk into your local electronics store, both brands will stand out as high-quality LCD TVs. So how do you choose between the two manufacturers? There are several decisions that you will need to make as you examine TVs from the respective manufacturers. The prices from each manufacturer tend to vary similarly among different models within their own product lines. Larger screens and more features are of course more expensive than smaller screens and fewer features. From a leading U.S. retailer, prices on Samsung LCD TVs ranges from $280 for a 22-inch screen to $2,070 for a 46-inch screen. On the Sony side, you are looking to pay $400 for a 19-inch screen and up to $1900 for a 46-inch screen. So as you can see, these two manufacturers' prices are relatively similar for similar TV models.

This is a very subjective topic. Each individual will have had different experiences with each manufacturer, some good. some not so good. These experiences may stem from the purchase of a defective product to difficulties claiming a warranty to having a difficult time speaking with the customer-service representative. Whatever your personal experience with this company, it is something that will weigh heavily on your purchase decisions.

There is much more to an LCD TV than simple screen size. There is aspect ratio, contrast ratio, resolution and a variety of video inputs, among the more important specifications. Taking the two 46-inch screens mentioned previously, the aspect ratio on both is 16:9, the contrast ratio on the Samsung is 150,000:1, whereas the Sony is 100,000:1. The resolution of both is 1900x1080 or 1080P, and the only difference in available video inputs is that the Samsung lacks an S-Video input.

Both Samsung and Sony make very similarly featured TVs for fairly similar prices, as we have already seen. The importance of the TVs' various features is a decision best left with the taste of the customer. For instance, a customer may not care about S-Video at all and consider a higher contrast rate far more important. That being the case, the customer will choose the Samsung over the Sony. The opposite would be true of a customer that values the S-Video port over the higher contrast ratio.
Warranty

The warranty is very important when it comes to purchasing any electronics. TVs are no exception. In this case, however, Sony and Samsung do not differentiate from one another, so the warranty should have no bearing on the purchasing decision. Both offer only one-year warranties. This leaves the individual retailer to offer customers extended store warranties for an additional price.
