Foods provide us with nutrients and vitamins that energize the body to get through the busy day. Unfortunately, many people often find themselves feeling tired or sleepy after a meal. A few factors could be the result of this state of "food coma" but can easily be avoided.

    • The most important factor is to look at the foods you eat. The body has a difficult time digesting processed foods, refined white carbohydrates, sweets and foods high in fat. The body immediately breaks down food into smaller components which is then absorbed by the blood and carried to nourish and energize the cells. The healthier the foods you eat, the more proper nutrients are delivered to re-fuel the body in order for it to work properly. Junk foods provide absolutely no nutritional value, and though they may fill you up with a spark of energy, they do not satisfy your hunger and ultimately leaves you feeling fatigued.

    • Foods need to be digested and absorbed slowly. The longer it takes to digest, the more energy they will provide. Oatmeal, whole grains and legumes are all foods that take time to digest. These are the foods that will satisfy your hunger and have enough nutrients to keep you going throughout the day.

    • The quantity of the food can also be a factor. If you eat real, fresh, healthy foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts, then the quantity should not affect you feeling tired. These are foods meant to be eaten as much as you like. However, eating a lot of processed foods or heavy foods like, meat will undeniably make you feel overly full and tired.

    • Ideally, you should be eating five to six small meals throughout the day. Many people tend to skip the most important meal of the day---breakfast. Skipping breakfast or any meal will leave your body tired and weak which leads to bad food decision. When hunger strikes, instead of taking the time to prepare a healthy, nourishing meal, you will most likely grab the quickest and often, unhealthy foods. Generally, you want to eat three meals plus two snacks which are not to be confused with desserts. Snacks can be fresh berries with yogurt, carrots with hummus or a mix of nuts. Eat often but be sure to eat real foods.

    • Finally, if you are eating properly and still feel tiresome after a meal, you might be allergic to certain foods. Celiac disease is a type of food allergy or intolerance to gluten which includes many common foods like barley, bulgur, wheat, semolina and many, many other foods and condiments. Other symptoms aside from fatigue can include: muscle weakness, nausea, abdominal pain and anemia. In order to be sure, it is best to consult a doctor and receive a screening. Although it is not treatable, it is a disease that can become tolerable with a specific gluten-free diet.
