Verizon Fios is a bundled package (television, Internet and telephone) that is transmitted over a fiber-optic communications network. As of 2009, the service is available in several cities in California, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Maryland Florida, Massachusetts and Virginia. According to DailyTech, as of 2009 Fios is available in 12.7 million homes, with 3.1 million subscribers for Internet service and 2.04 million for Fios TV.
Cablevision also has a bundled package of television, phone and Internet service. The Internet service portion is called Optimum Online. This service currently covers many parts of the New York Metropolitan area (New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania).

The Verizon Fios fiber-optic network's reliability and its ability to operate at significant speeds has made it a major threat to cable-based providers. As a result, cable providers have been coming up with new ways to transmit signals to their customers faster and more efficiently to remain competitive.
In 2006, Optimum Online introduced a service they called Boost, which provided customers speeds of 15 Mbits downstream and 2 Mbits upstream. And in 2009, Optimum Online introduced a Ultra, which increased bandwidth limits up to 101 Mbits.

Verizon Fios Internet service offers speeds of up to 20 Mbits upstream and 5 Mbits downstream. Its television service (depending on the type of subscription) offers local channels, about 295 regular channels (Essentials), around 348 digital channels, and several premium channel packages. And the Fios phone service is an analog, which runs over the Fios network.
The Optimum Online service is transmitted through the cable connection to a cable modem, which is then connected to a computer directly or wirelessly.
