What Is Computer Equipment?
"Computer equipment" is a loosely defined term that can refer to any or all of the many different parts of a computer, as well as peripheral devices such as printers, external hard drives and servers. Basically, anything relating to a computer is considered computer equipment. All computer equipment can be classified into one of several basic categories.
-
Computer Parts
-
Computer parts are the most elemental pieces of computer equipment. Parts can be anything from a RAM module to the motherboard. Most computer parts are found inside computers, as they are what make the computer run. A computer is basically made up of a case, a motherboard, a hard drive, an optical (CD or DVD) drive, a video card, RAM, a network card, and a sound card.
Computer Monitors
-
There are two common types of monitors: cathode ray tubes (CRT) and liquid crystal displays (LCD). CRT monitors are quickly becoming obsolete as consumers turn to the lighter, thinner, more capable LCD monitors. CRTs are distinguished by a rounded screen and a large back; LCDs are thin with a flat screen. Newer monitors are being produced with light-emitting diode technology, or LED, which requires less energy. This technology may very well overtake LCD monitors in the next couple of years.

Computer Networking Devices
-
Computer equipment does not necessarily have to be the computer itself, or the monitor attached to it. Networking devices such as wireless routers are also classified as computer equipment. Networking devices allowing computers to connect to one another and to the Internet. Other common networking devices include cable modems, DSL modems and servers.
Computer Input Devices
Peripherals
-
The last major type of computer equipment is peripherals, devices attached to your computer that enhance its functionality. Printers are probably the most common peripherals. Some peripheral devices are similar to the parts inside the computer. External hard drives, for example, offer more storage and allow users to back up their data. Another common example is an external video card, which allows a computer user to connect an additional monitor via a USB port.
Buying Peripherals
-
Individual computer equipment components are available from a wide variety of dealers and retailers. See the Resources for links to two popular sites, Newegg and Tiger Direct.
