The History of Smartboards
SMART Technologies developed the SMART Board, which is an interactive whiteboard and has been in vogue since 1991. The SMART Board is a pioneer in the interactive whiteboard technology that offers touch based controls using Microsoft Windows-based applications.

The Technology
-
SMART Board technology makes use of touch based controls to take inputs such as selecting a particular option, from the customers. The interactive whiteboard is equivalent to PC input tools such as the keyboard and the mouse. A projector is connected to display the video output that is focused on the whiteboard and acts as a large touch-screen. The whiteboard uses four different kinds of digital markers instead of the traditional markers.
DViT Technology
-
Flat panel overlays as well as rear-projection SMART Boards use DViT technology, which is the acronym for Digital Vision Touch technology. This technology enables the user to control the whiteboard using touch for writing on the whiteboards. Built-in cameras and compatible software detect the touch inputs and translate them as the equivalent keyboard or mouse inputs. Contrary to resistive technology, DViT technology does not use any additional on-screen equipment to process inputs.

SMART Pen Tray
-
SMART Board interactive whiteboards have a tray that holds four pens and an eraser. The pens do not have any electronic components or any kind of ink. The pen tray senses through an optical sensor when a pen is removed from the pen slot and the SMART Board thereafter, analysis the contact made by the pen using particular software. The four pens are four different colors - black, blue, green and red. One can use any color to write on the whiteboard.
SMART Board Tools
-
The various tools that are used in conjunction with the SMART Board are on-screen keyboard, video player and recorder, start center, magnifier, LinQ software and screen shade. The camera function enables the user to take pictures from the web or other documents and use them on the slide on the whiteboard. Another feature allows the user to write on board and convert the written text into computer recognizable fonts and formats.
Notebook
-
Notebook software is a combination of a variety of content delivery solutions that enable the customer to share, edit and save text and graphics. The notebook interface partitions the whiteboard into two. One part has a tab column while the other is the whiteboard space. There are three tabs: page sorter, gallery and attachment to cater to the various needs of the user.
