- The default application that is used to manage iPod's is iTunes. When an iPod is first configured, it only works with the computer with which it was originally set up. For example, if you configured your iPod with iTunes on a Windows computer, it will only be able to work on that Windows computer; therefore, if you attempt to upload music using iTunes on a Macintosh, you will not be immediately able to because of compatibility issues. You would have to initialize your iPod and Mac in order to sync them together. This would delete any music already on the iPod. You can also run into music uploading issues if your computer does not have sufficient hardware to run iTunes. Generally, iTunes requires at least 512MB of RAM and 1 GHz processor speed.
- iPods come with a variety of hard drive space ranging from 1GB to 80GB and more. While these hard drive space may seem like a lot, people do use almost all if not all of it. If you have a variety of large video files, thousands of photos and lots of music files, you won't be able to upload music if your hard drive space is full. A corrupt hard drive can also prevent you from uploading songs because it causes communication errors between your iPod and iTunes. An iPod hard drive becomes corrupt if you previously downloaded corrupt files that cause hard drive issues.
- Downloading the correct music formats on your iPod ensures that you have quality playbacks whenever you use your iPod. iPod supports music formats such as MP3 and AAC, which are both high quality compression formats that keep file sizes smaller. You will run into problems if you try to upload songs in formats such as WMA which is currently not supported on iPods. While there are claims that WMA will be soon be supported on iPods, right now, songs in that format will cause uploading errors.
- You can run into music uploading problems because either iTunes is not detecting your iPod, or there are problems with the USB port to which your iPod is connected. If you have a newer iPod and your iTunes program is outdated, you will run into communication problems because the older iTunes program lacks the necessary updates to run the newer iPod. You can also run into problems if there is an overload with your USB ports which prevents communication with the motherboard on your computer. Most overloads are caused by too many devices connected to the USB ports on your computer.
- Always make sure that you are using your iPod with the computer with which it was originally configured. If you want to use it with another computer, (e.g. Mac), you will have to restore the iPod back to its default settings and authorize the Mac on iTunes. While this is another option, keep in mind that it erases all currently saved information. Download and install the latest iTunes to improve communication with your iPod. If you are still having connection problems, you should connect your iPod to another USB port.
