Ford Trucks Vs. Dodge Trucks

The Ford F-150 and Dodge Ram 1500 pickup trucks built their reputations on durability and towing power. The F-150, in fact, has been the leader in maximum towing capacity, but the Ram is difficult to match in raw power with its array of powerful Cummins diesel engines and the massive 6.7-liter Hemi powerplant.

  1. Ram Specifications

    • The Dodge Ram pickup offers Cummins diesel engine options

The Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab pickup features a 3.7-liter V-6 engine with 215 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque. It has been placed on a 120-inch wheelbase and is 209 inches long, 79.4 inches wide and 79.4 inches tall. Curb weight is a hefty 4,960 pounds. It's equipped with the 26-gallon fuel tank.

    F-150 Specifications

    • The base engine for the Ford F-150 is a 4.6-liter V-8

The 202-horse, 4.6-liter V-8 powers the 2009 Ford F-150 regular cab to generate 260 pound-feet of torque. The F-150 is placed on wheelbase of 126 inches. It's 213.1 inches long, 74.6 inches tall and 78.8 inches wide. It comes with a 26-gallon fuel tank. The curb weight is 4,707 pounds.

    Ram Features

    • The Dodge Ram is equipped with a wide range of standard features

The Ram's standard equipment for the 1500, 2500 and the dually 3500 models are driver/passenger airbags, side airbags, heated exterior mirrors, heavy-duty shocks, power windows and locks, trip computer, tilt steering wheel, satellite radio, CD player with MP3 capability and an overhead console. Trim levels are the base SL, the mid-range SLT and the high-end Sport Package.

    F-150 Features

    • The Ford F-150 comes in seven trim levels

The F-150 is equipped with numerous standard features, including a CD and AM/FM audio system with MP3 capability, air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, driver/side/front passenger airbags and a 40/20/40 seat. Ram Performance

    • The Ram sports several different engine options, including the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, which generates 390 horsepower and 407 pound-feet of torque. Also available are the 5.9- and 6.7-liter Cummins V-8 diesels for heavy-duty work. A well-equipped Ram can achieve a maximum towing capacity of 3,800 pounds. In addition, the Hemi's Multi Displacement System is engineered to shut down some cylinders for fuel efficiency under certain conditions.

    F-150 Performance

    • A second version of the F-150's 4.6-liter V-8 sports 292 horsepower. An optional 320-horse, 5.4-liter V-8 also is available. Towing capacity outranks other pickups with the 5.4-liter V-8 at 11,300 pounds. It can carry 3,030 pounds in the bed.

    Face-to-Face

    • The Dodge Ram excels over the F-150 in raw power and straightaway speeds, but struggles to match Ford in overall towing capacity, according to motortrend.com. Both vehicles offer more than enough options, cab configurations and standard features, making them evenly matched. Price tags are almost identical. The 2009 F-150 begins at $21,565, while the Ram 1500 starts at $21,520.
