What Are the Side Effects of Bentyl?

Bentyl is a prescription medicine that is used for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is an intestinal ailment. This medication is often used when others have not worked successfully. Bentyl is classified as being an antispasmodic and an anticholinergic. As with any medicine, there are some possible side effects associated with Bentyl.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • There are some common side effects of Bentyl. These side effects are not usually considered to be serious, since they usually go away as the body adjusts to the medicine. If the side effects do not go away, however, you should consult your doctor. Side effects include sweating less, blurry vision, taste loss, anxiety, nervousness, nausea, feeling lightheaded, dry mouth, drowsiness, headache, problems sleeping, constipation and dizziness.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are also a possibility with Bentyl. In situations of serious side effects, it is necessary to seek emergency medical help. Some potentially harmful side effects of the medicine include hallucinations, passing out, problems with focusing of the eyes, trouble speaking, rapid heartbeat, abnormal weakness, throwing up, chest pounding, loss of memory for a brief time, disorientation, problems with urinating, difficulty moving, confusion, diarrhea and agitation.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are also considered to be severe side effects of Bentyl. In situations of allergic reaction, it is vital to get immediate medical assistance. Some signs of allergic reaction to Bentyl are trouble breathing, chest tightness, itchiness, swelling of the face, mouth, lips, and tongue, breaking out into hives, and skin rash.

    Warnings

    • Bentyl is not suitable for everybody. Some people who should avoid using this medication include those that are allergic to any of its components, those with glaucoma, those with heart-related problems as a result of extreme bleeding, those with myasthenia gravis, those with acid reflux and esophageal inflammation, and those with blockage of the urinary tract, esophagus, intestine, and stomach. Nursing females also should avoid taking Bentyl.

    Overdose

    • If a person thinks that they might have overdosed on Bentyl, they must immediately get medical assistance. Some signs of potential Bentyl overdose include fast breathing and heartbeat, abnormally dry mouth, weakness of the muscles, hallucinations, dry, hot, and flushed skin, strange behavior, hallucinations, throwing up, abnormal drowsiness or dizziness, nausea, restlessness, thirst, widened pupils, seizures, disorientation, and blurry vision.
