Alternatives to Tanning Beds

If you desire a glowing tan all year round, tanning beds offer a quick fix. However, tanning beds also come with added risk, because of the intense UVA and UVB rays they omit. Concentrated UV rays are linked to premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. There are several way you can obtain a summer glow without opting to use a tanning bed or booth.

    Airbrush Tans

  1. Airbrush tanning is a UV-free alternative to tanning beds that offers natural glowing results. The process can take 10 minutes or less and will give results that last for about a week. The tan appears natural and is void of streaks or mismatched color. The FDA approved dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the main ingredient, in the 1970s; however, DHA will not protect your skin from the sun's rays and you will need to use a sunblock when outside.
  2. Sun

  3. Step outside and soak up some rays. The sun is a catalyst for vitamin D synthesis that is essential for your body. The sun has about 10 times fewer harmful rays than a tanning bed, but can still cause sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer. Use a sunscreen on all exposed areas during time spent in the sun. This will help your skin receive some rays but will block harmful levels of exposure. Your tan may take longer to develop but you will be keeping your skin healthier in the process.
  4. Pills

  5. Tanning pills are an oral alternative to tanning beds. Some pills require the use of the sun, while others do not. Results can show within the first two weeks with the tan reaching its "full potential" around the four-week mark. The pills work by increasing melanin production to speed up the tanning process. Tanning pills are not yet approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and their unregulated status causes hesitance among some consumers. If you decide to use tanning pills, remember to use sunscreen or sunblock, as the pills will not protect your skin against harmful UV rays.
  6. Lotions

  7. Sunless tanning lotions are a great alternative to tanning beds. This option avoids any risky side effects at a low price. Sunless lotions come in many shapes, sizes and colors. You can find these products at your local department store or pharmacy. Choose a color that is designated for your skin complexion. Follow all directions printed on the label and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after use. The only downsides to using sunless lotions are the possibility of an uneven tan and the mess the lotion can create. Apply the product in an even manner, after shaving or exfoliating, and be sure to rub the lotion in completely. The product will fade with showering and swimming, so you can always try for a more-even tan the second time around.
  8. Towels

  9. Tanning towels are a newer alternative to tanning beds that are not as messy as sunless lotions. The towels work by rubbing a tan onto the skin. Work the towel from your feet up and apply in an even manner. After the towel has dried, you can go over any uneven or spotty areas to create the perfect sunless tan.
