What Is .NET Certification?

.NET certification is offered by Microsoft as a way for developers and IT specialists to boost resume credentials and salary requirements. Microsoft has several certification tracks, but the .NET certifications are entitled Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD). Both these certifications focus on the most recent version of the .NET framework.

Visual Studio

  • Visual Studio is the Microsoft developer's main tool for application programming. Part of the .NET certification is an exam that tests the developer's knowledge of the workspace. Having a copy of the latest Visual Studio software helps the programmer study for the certification exam more efficiently.

Windows Based Development

  • Part of the .NET certification is knowing how to use the framework to develop Windows form. For instance, when a user runs an application, the window that opens is called a Windows form. This technology is different than a web application. Part of Windows programming is also knowing how to develop services. This is also included on the .NET exams.

Web-Based Programming

  • Web based programming in .NET is the creation of online applications using web forms. The programmer is required to know how to make interactive web pages using the .NET framework. Some knowledge of security, database interaction, and hosting helps understand web forms for a better grade on the test.

Client-Server Applications

  • Certification also requires the developer to know how to create and implement server-client applications. Since server operating systems are different from desktop versions, knowing security and permission standard on Windows servers is important for the .NET exams.

  • Each certification for .NET require two exams - a core exam and one additional specialty exam. The core exam only needs to be taken once. The core exam is an overview of the .NET framework. It's a more generalized understanding of the technology. The specialty exam is chosen by the developer. For instance, if the developer wants to specialize in Windows forms, exam "#70-526: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Windows-Based Client Development" tests the applicant on the corresponding .NET technology.
