Learner's Permit

An Italian learner's permit lasts six months. To acquire one, the applicant must provide several key pieces of information. Form MC 2112 MEC, the learner's permit application, must be filled out and returned. A Medical Health Certificate must by signed by a doctor. A valid photo ID and proof of residency are required, and applicants should photocopy both. Finally, authorities require two passport-sized photos that are no more than 6 months old and match the photo on the Medical Health Certificate.
Theory Test

After a period of practice driving, prospective drivers can take the Theory Exam, a multiple-choice test required of all licensed Italian drivers. As with the learner's permit, drivers must present a photo ID, proof of residency and two passport-sized photos. In addition, drivers must present completed form TT 2112 (driving school form) and a tax code (a tax stamp available throughout Italy).

Mopeds

Getting a moped license in Italy is a bit different. First, you only have to be 14 to apply. Also, you only need to pass an exam and carry the Certificate of Aptitude, the equivalent of a driver's license. Foreigners are not eligible for this license.
Renewing a License

License holders under age 50 must renew every 10 years, while license holders 50 to 70 must renew every five years (and every three years after 70). To renew, drivers must provide form DTT 953I (a license renewal form) and documentation from a medical exam denoting the driver has no health problems that could impair driving. The renewal process can take up to 40 days.
