About the Rules of Yahtzee

Considered to be a family favorite for more than 50 years, Yahtzee by Hasbro is a game where players throw dice, score points and use scoring strategy. The object of the game is for one or more players to roll dice for scoring combinations and get the highest total score. The standard game includes five dice, a plastic cup, score cards, 10 plastic bonus chips and instructions. The Standard Edition is the core of later different editions, providing the game's basic rules.

  1. Game Summary

    • Highest score wins.

On each turn, a player rolls the dice up to three times to get the highest scoring combination for one of 13 categories. After the rolls are finished, players must place a score or a zero in one of the 13 category boxes on the scorecard. The game ends when all players have filled in their 13 boxes. Scores are totaled, including any bonus points. The player with the highest total score wins.

    Who Plays First

    • It's not just the roll.

To decide who goes first, each player in turn rolls all five dice. The player with the highest total goes first. Play then passes to the left.

    Taking a Turn

    • Each player during a turn may roll the dice up to three times, although a player may stop and score after the first or second roll. In each turn, a player keeps the dice that he does not want to re-roll. The object is to keep the dice rolled that can equal the highest scoring combination. When the rolls are over, the player must score the roll.

    Scoring

    • How should I score?

Depending on the dice roll, there are several combinations that could be used in scoring, and this is where the strategy of the game comes into play. When a Yahtzee category is already filled in on a person's scorecard, the roll is added to some other open, appropriate category. In the upper section, usable dice are added together for points. When scoring in the lower section, the player uses the total number of points allowable for that category, as listed on the scorecard. If no categories work for the roll, a player must fill in a zero somewhere.

    Yahtzee Bonus

    • Yahtzee scorecard

If a player has already scored 50 points for Yahtzee, 100 bonus points are scored for each additional Yahtzee rolled. If a player rolls Yahtzee and has scored a zero in that category on an earlier roll, she does not get a Yahtzee bonus and has to find some other way to use the points in the roll.
