Weddings typically include children in the wedding party and in attendance. A cute little ring bearer and precious little flower girl complete any picture-perfect wedding. Whether your child is included in the wedding party or not, quite a bit of thought should go into what your child will wear to the wedding and in the ceremony.

    Flower Girl

  1. For children included in the wedding party, their outfits are significant to the bride and her vision of her wedding. Flower girls typically wear elaborate dresses for formal weddings. They can be white, match the bride's dress or match the bridal party's dresses. Flower girls can wear long or short dresses. Flowers can be added in the flower girl's hair, sometimes as a halo of flowers to coordinate with her dress and the flower petals she drops.
  2. Ring Bearer

  3. Depending on the formality of the wedding, the ring bearer can get away with a couple of different outfit choices. He can wear a tuxedo matching the groomsmen or even the groom. The tuxedo can be white or black and have accessories, such as a vest or cummerbund that is the same color as the bridal party's dresses. He can wear a suit, with a full jacket, or a short-sleeved shirt and a vest. For a more casual wedding, the ring bearer can wear nice slacks or shorts with a polo shirt that matches the wedding colors.
  4. After the Wedding

  5. The flower girl and ring bearer should stay dressed up throughout the ceremony and for the wedding pictures. However, it may be a good idea for the kids to change into something slightly more comfortable and less fancy for the reception. They should still match the wedding colors and look nice; however, don't chance the flower girl spilling punch on her white dress or the ring bearer putting holes in the knees of his tuxedo pants.
  6. Young Guests

  7. Even if your children are not a part of the wedding, they should still be dressed nicely out of respect for the bride and groom. However, they should not outshine the wedding party. Another thing to consider is the tone of the wedding. Don't dress your daughter in a princess gown or your son in a suit if the wedding is supposed to be dress-casual in a backyard or at the beach. Don't dress them in jeans and T-shirts for a formal evening wedding in a ballroom. Make sure you know what the dress code is for the wedding and adhere to it.
  8. Weather

  9. Make sure the outfits your children wear are comfortable, possibly stain resistant, and make sense for the time of day and time of year. You don't want to dress your daughter in a sundress when it's 6 in the evening and 40 degrees outside. Your son shouldn't be wearing a long-sleeved dress shirt with slacks at 2 in the afternoon when it's over 100 degrees. Take measures to dress your children for what the weather is supposed to be like, and come prepared for unexpected weather. Bring a light sweater or jacket for the kids or dress them in layers that are still wedding appropriate.
  10. Size

  11. Typically you plan out yours and your child's outfits for special events, such as a wedding, in advance. When you go shopping for the kids, it is important to remember that they are kids, meaning they will grow. Depending on how far in advance you purchase their clothes, it may be a good idea to go up a size to give them a bit of extra room for an unexpected growth spurt. If they are in the wedding party, or if it is a formal wedding, you may want to have them fitted a week or two before the wedding to ensure the best fit possible.
  12. Shoes

  13. When purchasing dress shoes for your children, it is important to purchase shoes that are comfortable for them, no matter how cute they look on them. Don't buy any shoes too far in advance as they may outgrow them.
