Causes of Low Male Libido

Low libido in men is usually caused by medical or psychological reasons, or medication. Common causes listed on 4 Men's Health include low testosterone, diseases, depression, stress and prescription medication. Fortunately, most of these issues have simple resolutions, including eliminating stress or adding certain hormones.

  1. Low Testosterone

    • According to 4 Men's Health, men's bodies can occasionally stop producing the correct amount of testosterone. Testosterone is a chemical that drives sexual excitement in men, so a diminished sex drive often results from a lack of testosterone. This issue is often treated with hormone replacement therapy, which can be prescribed by a doctor.

    Disease

    • Certain medical conditions affect sex drive, either by directly throwing chemical levels out of balance or by resulting in pain that causes a man to not want sex out of fear of aggravating the condition. 4 Men's Health includes diabetes, Parkinson's disease, anemia and heart disease as possible sources of low libido.

    Depression

    • Depression affects chemicals in the brain that affect sex drive, and it can also cause the person to feel low self-esteem and a lack of self worth. According to Net Doctor and 4 Men's Health, depression is a common cause of low libido among men.

    Stress

    • Stress can affect a person's libido by simply making them too worried and too busy to think about sex and get the energy to have sex. 4 Men's Health cites relationship issues as being a common stressor that can lead to lowered libido. Net Doctor also lists stress from unresolved childhood issues as a possible cause.

    Drugs and Medication

    • Alcohol use is a common cause of temporarily lowered libido, and abuse of cocaine can also be a factor in men's sex drive, according to Net Doctor. Prescription drugs can be a factor as well. 4 Men's Health lists antidepressants as low libido causers, and Net Doctor lists Proscar (a prescription for prostate issues) as a cause.
