Long Term Effects of Prevacid

Prevacid is a medication available by prescription only and used for the treatment of stomach ulcers and acid reflux. Prevacid is a tablet administered orally, typically in once-per-day doses. Reactions to Prevacid can range from mild to severe, and can last for a duration of several hours after taking to several days or weeks. It is important that you inform your doctor if you are experiencing any reactions as a result of taking Prevacid.

  1. Dosage

    • Take Prevacid exactly as it was prescribed. Do not skip or miss a dose of Prevacid. If you forget to take a dose, take that missed dose as soon as you are able. Do not double up on the medication, as that can cause overdose. Symptoms of Prevacid overdose include hives, difficulty breathing or facial swelling (face, throat, neck or tongue). Seek medical attention if you suspect you have taken too much of this medicine.

    Mild to Moderate Reactions

    • Mild to moderate reactions to Prevacid can last for hours, days, weeks or even longer. If you are experiencing any bothersome side effect as a result of Prevacid, you need to talk with your doctor who may adjust your medication or provide an alternative treatment. Side effects that are often associated with Prevacid include headache, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation, and feeling nauseous.

    Severe Reactions

    • Some side effects of Prevacid are considered severe and require immediate emergency medical attention. It is important that you get emergency care right away if you experience an allergic reaction such as hives, have difficulty breathing or have oral swelling (including the face, lips or throat).

    Interactions

    • Some medications can cause an interaction with Prevacid and make side effects more severe or last for longer durations. Tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs before taking Prevacid: Omnipen, Principen, Reyataz, Plavix, Lanoxin, Nizoral, Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Elizophyllin, Slo-Bid, Theobid or Uniphyl. Be sure to mention any medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines.

    Warnings

    • If you are breastfeeding, do not use Prevacid, as it can pass into breast milk. If you take a medication called Carafate, do not take your dose within 30 minutes of taking Prevacid. This medication is not intended for use in children under the age of 1.
