What Is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is the brand name for the drug oseltamivir. Tamiflu is an antiviral and is prescribed to treat infections caused by viruses---particularly influenza A, influenza B and swine influenza A. The drug reduces the symptoms of the flu, as well as reducing the chances that individuals become infected with influenza if they have been in contact with people who have the flu. Tamiflu comes in capsule and powder suspension form. It should be noted that Tamiflu is not a substitute for the flu vaccine.

  1. Medical Problems/Effects

    • Certain medical conditions may affect how Tamiflu reacts in the body. Individuals who have heart, kidney, liver or lung disease should alert their doctor before taking Tamiflu. Individuals who have medical conditions or illnesses that may require hospitalization may not be able to take the drug. People who have fructose intolerance should use Tamiflu with caution and discuss possible adverse reactions with their doctors.

    Usage Guidelines

    • Individuals who are given Tamiflu to treat the flu should know that the medication works best when it is taken within 48 hours of developing flu symptoms. The medication should be taken for 5 days and can be taken with or without food. Individuals who are given Tamiflu to prevent flu should begin taking the drug within 48 hours of being around someone who has the flu. The medication should be taken for 10 days and can be taken with or without food.

    Dosage Guidelines

    • Dosage instructions depend on the patient, depending on his medical history, age and whether the individual has the flu or is trying to prevent the flu. The dosage should not be increased, decreased or discontinued without first consulting the prescribing physician. If a dosage is missed, patients are advised to take the dose. However, double dosing is not safe. If it is almost time for the next schedule dose, forego the missed dose altogether.

    Side Effects

    • Tamiflu may cause side effects. The more common side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Less common side effects include stomach pain, nose bleeds, dry eyes, dizziness, cough, fatigue, headache, eye pain and swelling and trouble sleeping. Rare side effects include sneezing, trouble breathing, pale skin, unusual bruising or bleeding.

    Precautions/Warnings

    • If your flu symptoms become worse after taking Tamiflu, you should consult your physician right away. Patients should know that Tamiflu can cause irritability, agitation and other behavior changes. Any abnormal changes should be reported to the physician immediately, so treatment can be given to help ward off the chance that a patient causes injury to himself or others.
