Salmon allergy is a condition that produces an allergic response when a person consumes finned fish, such as salmon. The proteins found in the fish can cause a person to develop severe symptoms, some of them potentially life threatening. If you have or suspect a salmon allergy, it is important to talk to your doctor about preventative measures to stay safe and healthy.

Types

A person who is allergic to salmon may be allergic to other types of fish as well, such as cod and tuna. These finned fish have particular proteins that set off a person’s allergic response. If you are allergic to finned fish, you have a higher risk of being allergic to other types of seafood, such as shellfish. People with shellfish allergies must avoid lobster, crab, mussels, oysters and clams.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a salmon allergy can occur if an affected person eats, inhales or touches the fish. The type of symptoms the person develops will vary between each patient. In mild cases, a patient may have facial swelling, itching and hives. Seafood allergies can produce stomach problems, like diarrhea, nausea, gas, vomiting and acid reflux. The patient may feel tingling sensations in her throat or mouth. Sinus problems, such as sneezing and nasal leakage, can occur as well. A person’s breathing is also likely to be affected and the patient may cough or find it difficult to breathe.

In severe cases, a person can go into anaphylactic shock when he consumes salmon or other finned fish. Symptoms produced by this type of allergic reaction include chest tightness, shortness of breathe and a choking sensation. The person may lose consciousness and suffer a quick drop in blood pressure.

Misconceptions

If you become sick after eating salmon and suffer from upset stomach, vomiting or nausea, it does not necessarily mean that you have a salmon allergy. Food poisoning can produce similar symptoms to a seafood allergy and can occur when a person consumes spoiled salmon.
