What Are the Treatments for Discolored Toenails?
Toenails can become thick and yellow for a number of reasons, including fungal infections and accidents. A variety of options are available as treatments for discolored toenails. Does this Spark an idea?

Home Remedies
-
While there are a number of home remedies to treat toenail fungus, there is little or no scientific evidence to support their efficacy. Taking extra time while grooming can help to stop the growth of yellow nails. By soaking the toes in warm water, the nails become softened and malleable. Once dried, an emery board can be used to thin the nails by lightly rubbing the top of the thick, affected nail. Nails should be kept trim following the thinning process, cutting straight across the top of the toe.
Medication
-
Antifungal topical ointments can help to kill the fungus. The fungus can be eradicated with twice daily application of a few drops of the liquid on the edge of the toes over a couple months. As the new, healthy nail grows in the discoloration can be cut off. Prescription drugs are the most effective means of treating toe fungus but the possible side effects of the drugs may prevent some people from using the treatments. Common side effects of antifungal medications include nausea, headaches and liver damage. Interactions with other medications also can be dangerous.

Removal
-
Discolored toenails can be removed for those who do not want to wait for the unsightly nail to grow out or do not respond to other treatments. If the infection is in the bloodstream, there is a chance that the new nail will grow back with the same discoloration. Permanent removal of the nail is another option that many prefer. Women who have a nail removed permanently often paint a new one on that is barely discernible.
Prevention
-
Prevention is the best cure to avoid recurring bouts of nail discoloration. Those who are prone to nail fungus should avoid walking through public places where pools of standing water can host harmful bacteria. Shoes should be worn when walking though water, especially at fitness centers and public swimming pools. Feet remain drier and less likely to provide a moist environment for bacteria growth when they are covered with socks made of 100 percent wool or cotton. Nail polish should be avoided because it can starve the toenails of necessary air.
Diet
-
Toe fungus can be more prevalent in people who have taken antibiotics for other conditions because the good bacteria gets killed off as well as the infections. Adding probiotics through supplements can help to add the good bacteria back into the body. Foods such as yogurt and kefir contain probiotics. There are a number of dairy and cereal products on the market that have added probiotics. Diets high is sugar also create a system more prone to fungal infections.
