What to Do When Frontline Plus Is Not Working on My Dog

Fleas are a major issue for dogs and the people who call them their pets. These little insects can sneak their way into a dog's coat, causing them great discomfort. In some cases, if a dog is severely infested, fleas can get into bed linens and carpets, causing owners to spend unnecessary amounts of money exterminating them. Frontline is one of the most common ways to prevent and kill fleas, but it's not always effective. In those cases there are other ways to prevent and kill these pests.

  1. K9 Advantix

    • Frontline is not the only medicine for killing or preventing flea infestation. Another popular product is K9 Advantix, which is applied between the dog's shoulder blades just like Frontline.

    Advantage Flea Control

    • Advantage is another effective flea control product also applied the same way as the above two medicines.

    Sentinel

    • If you would rather not use a topical medicine then consider Sentinel. Administered in pill form, it kills fleas and ticks.

    Natural Flea Prevention

    • If you are not having any luck with these topical and oral medicines then consider natural preventative methods such as adding garlic, sulphur or black walnut hulls to your pet's diet, or soaps and shampoos that include pine cedar, bergamot, rosemary, lavender, citronella, juniper or geranium.

    Shampoos

    • Shampoos are another way to kill or control fleas on dogs. Check them out at any pet supermarket or your local grocery store.

    Borax

    • Borax can be used around the home or yard to repel fleas. Though it does not kill fleas already on a dog, sprinkling Borax in your yard or around doors will deter fleas from getting near your dog.

    Eucalyptus

    • Fleas do not like the smell of eucalyptus leaves, so keeping these leaves around a dog's pen or around the home will repel fleas.

I took my 4 month old puppie to the vet because he was infested with fleas. The vet had me use Advantix, that did not work. The vet then had me use Frontline. That did not work. He had me use Frontline spray 1 x a week. Then I noticed my puppie had scabs all over his little body. So I returned him to the vet and the vet insisted to continue using the Frontline. I have not continued because I beleive this Frontline is a very strong med and is causing my puppie worst damage. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I shoudl do? This little guy is suffering and I dont know what to do for him. I have also continually bathed him and I dont beleive this is good for him either. These fleas just dont seem to want to go away. I have removed all his toys and furnished him with new bedding but that does not work either.
