Hands-on training is one method used by educational systems and businesses alike to help teach individuals to learn a certain task. It provides real world experience by allowing the trainee to get her hands directly on whatever is being learned, creating a sense of empowerment.

What is Hands-On Training?

Hands-on training is an educational training tool that can be more effective than training provided in the traditional classroom setting. Hands-on training allows the person being trained not only to hear what tasks need to be completed, but gives him the opportunity to perform the task right then and there. In an ideal situtation, a trainer is available to work with the trainee to provide guidance rather then leaving the trainee on his own to figure out what needs to be done.

Hands-on training provides real life applications that make it easier to understand what is being taught because the people learning can see it first-hand rather than just hear about it in a lecture. Therefore, the skill is more likely to stick with them. For some, this way of learning is much easier than listening to a lecture in a classroom which may lean to the boring side and result in the trainee tuning out. Additionally, hands-on training boasts productivity because the trainee is working while learning. Finally, it boosts the trainees' confidence because they have a trainer available to ask questions of if they are unclear about something. Ideally, that trainer will also provide positive reinforcement when the trainee is doing a good job.

Everyone has a different learning style and, for some, grasping concepts while doing them can be tough. They would prefer to read about a given topic, ask questions, and be prepared before engaging in the task. Those with this learning preference will likely have a difficult time with hands-on training and may not be so successful. Hands-on training can also be difficult at times because the trainee can throw off those around them if he messes up a task while working in a team environment. Additionally, from the trainee's standpoint, some companies do not pay a salary while on the hands-on training is being conducted or they only pay half of a full salary. Financially, this can present difficulties for the person in training.

Before a hands-on training is to begin, it's important for the trainer to prepare. This will help the training go smoother and for the trainee to be more successful at learning. To prepare, start by making a list of things that need to conveyed to the trainee. Next, set up whatever will be learned. For example, if training will take place on a computer software program, start the computer, install the software, open it, and make sure it is working properly. The same can be done if you are working on a factory line or doing something in the office. Walk through the steps the way the trainee will and make sure everything is working properly. Set an agenda for the training. Determine how long it will last, how long you will teach, and make sure you allow time for questions throughout the training. Be sure to provide any manuals or handouts that may pertain to what you are training on and have them available for the trainee. Finally, make sure you have any details needed to complete the task such as pens, staplers, computers, safety equipment, and so on.

If you are about to become involved in hands-on training, there are steps you can take to make the learning process easier. Do some research on whatever you are learning by reading a book, looking it up on the Internet, and talking to other people who are currently performing those tasks. Have them show you in advance how to do it if you can. Then brainstorm and write down a list of questions that you may already have before getting started. Be sure to ask these questions while you are being trained. Talk to the trainer in advance if possible to get a better idea of what is being expected of you. The more prepared you are before going into the training, the more successful you will be.
