Nervous Stomach Symptoms

A nervous stomach is a problem that impacts many individuals all over the world. People who have worries and anxieties often have their problems manifest themselves with stomach issues. Those issues can range from gas attacks all the way to bleeding ulcers. The stomach breaks down all food that enters the body and is loaded with acid. If your stomach acts up, you need to see a doctor quickly because you don't want a minor issue to become a serious one.

  1. Acid Reflux

    • One of the symptoms of a nervous stomach is acid reflux. The acids in the stomach are regurgitated up the esophagus and create a burning sensation in the throat. This creates pain and anxiety on its own and can go on for hours at a time.

    Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

    • Irritable bowel syndrome is another symptom of a nervous stomach but many doctors believe this is a problem resulting from the stomach's inability to digest food. It is a physiological problem that cannot be blamed on nervousness. Feeling anxious or worried can make IBS worse but it is not the only reason for its occurrence.

    Ulcers

    • Throughout the majority of the 20th century, stomach ulcers were looked at as a cause-and-effect relationship for people whose lives were dominated by stress. However, in the last 30 years, the medical community came to the conclusion that ulcers were not only the result of anxiety. Ulcers-- holes in the stomach lining--are also the result of a bacterium in the stomach that is transmitted through contaminated food and water.

    Gas Issues

    • Belching and flatulence can be symptoms of a nervous stomach. When life circumstances cause people to have anxiety, the impact may felt in their stomachs. Drinking coffee, carbonated beverages and milk, along with eating heavy foods that are high in fats, can cause people to belch excessively. These are unpleasant and somewhat embarrassing issues, but not overly harmful.

    Misconceptions

    • For many decades, nervousness was thought to be the cause of many stomach issues. However, the medical community has learned that bacteria and other health problems also play a major role in nervous stomach disorders.
