What Are the Treatments for Eczema on a Scalp?
Scalp eczema may also be referred to as seborrheic eczema. Scalp eczema usually causes patches of yellow-colored scales. It may affect random areas of the scalp or the entire scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis can often be treated with over-the-counter remedies, but prescription remedies may be needed in severe cases.

Medicated Shampoos
-
Scalp psoriasis can be treated with over-the-counter medicated shampoos. These shampoos should contain one or more of the following substances: coal tar, salicylic acid, ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione and selenium sulfide. Medicated shampoos should be used daily until symptoms improve and then about twice per week to keep symptoms under control. It may help to rotate between two different types of medicated shampoos. If over-the-counter medicated shampoos are unsuccessful, consult a doctor about prescription-strength medicated shampoos.
Medicated Creams
-
Over-the-counter cortisone creams and anti-fungal creams may help improve symptoms. A doctor can prescribe steroid creams that can be applied directly to the scalp. These steroid creams can relieve itching. These creams should be applied at least once per day. Severe scaling may be treated with a prescription ointment containing salicylic acid and coconut oil; this ointment works best if it is left on overnight.

Other Medications
-
A doctor may prescribe an oral medication known as Lamisil to treat scalp eczema. Also, medications such as Protopic and Elidel may be prescribed. Protopic and Elidel are medications that may relieve inflammation and may treat fungal infections. These medications should only be used after other treatment options have been unsuccessful and they should only be used temporarily.
Tea Tree Oil
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, one study has shown that applying tea tree oil to the scalp may improve symptoms. However, tea tree oil will probably not make symptoms completely disappear.
Treatment Tips
-
Do not use medicated shampoos on babies with scalp eczema. Adults with scalp eczema should be consistent with treatments for the best results. Shampooing daily with medicated shampoos and leaving the shampoo on the scalp for at least 5 minutes will produce the best results. Try not to scratch the affected areas.
