Insecticide Treatment for Bedbugs

Bedbugs feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded creatures and can be both the smallest and worst part of your trip. These tiny creatures get their name from their preferred habitat, which includes bedding, mattresses and sofas. They are often feared by weary travelers due to their ability to deliver multiple bites through the course of the night.

Identification

Contrary to popular belief, bedbugs are not invisible to the naked eye. In fact, they move slowly enough to be distinguished by a careful onlooker. Adults are wingless and have a reddish-brown color, being flat with an oval-shaped body. They are tiny, ranging from 1/8th to 3/16th of an inch (4 to 5 mm). Their bite marks, when visible, are generally either a flat, red welt or a raised bump. They do not usually contain a red dot in the center, as common to flea bites. And bites often appear as several in a row, possibly due to its search for a blood vein.

Prevention

Whether at home or traveling abroad, if bedbugs are suspected, cover up from head to toe with long pajamas and socks. While staying at hotels, perform a thorough inspection of the room, checking both the sheets and mattress. Request fresh bed linens daily. If the hotel has a Laundromat, personally wash your sheets in hot water 97 F (36 C) or hotter. A frequent vacuuming, while not a complete solution, may reduce the likelihood of bites.

Insecticides

A professional pest control company is the best solution. However, there are do-it-yourself remedies that can be effective. A variety of low-odor sprays and aerosol insecticides are available. These range in price from $10 to over $100. "Use insecticide sprays containing dichlorvos, permethrin or malathion around cracks and crevices in your home," the Mayo Clinic says. All suspected areas must be sprayed thoroughly. A deeper scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush may also be required to remove bedbug eggs. Consult an exterminator for suggestions on salvaging your mattress, as this may or may not be an option.

Bite Treatments

The main purpose of bite treatments for bedbugs are to relieve symptoms, such as itching, swelling or redness. Application of a cortisone cream may relieve itching. Certain bites may result in allergic reactions. Take antihistamines if needed and as directed for relief. Resist the urge to scratch bites, as this may cause infection.

Considerations

The spread of bed bugs can be difficult to stop. They live not only in bedding but also furniture, carpet and clothing. Exercise caution when departing an infested hotel room, as you may have some unwanted hitchhikers aboard your suitcase. For extra precaution, freeze suspected clothing for five days to two weeks. Also, don't forget to check your shoes carefully, as the pests may be hidden in the fabric or insoles.
